5 PPE Essentials Every Safety Officer Should Audit This Quarter

Howcroft Safety Team28 August 20264 min read

A practical checklist for safety officers to audit PPE compliance, from head protection to hi-vis. Includes BSIF compliance guidance.

Why regular PPE audits matter

PPE is the last line of defence, but only if it's in good condition, correctly specified and actually worn. A quarterly audit keeps your workforce protected and your business compliant.

The 5 essentials to audit

1. Head protection

Check helmets for cracks, UV degradation (discolouration) and suspension wear. Replace any helmet that has taken an impact, even if damage isn't visible. Typical service life: 5–7 years from manufacture.

2. Eye & face protection

Inspect goggles and visors for scratches that impair vision. Ensure anti-mist coatings are still effective. Replace if any chemical etching is present.

3. Hand protection

Match glove material to the hazard — cut-resistant for handling, chemical-resistant for spills, thermal for hot work. Check for tears and thinning.

4. Hi-vis clothing

Wash cycles degrade reflective tape. Check tape adhesion and reflectivity. EN ISO 20471 requires replacement when tape is worn.

5. Footwear

Check toe caps, midsoles and tread. Anti-slip properties degrade with wear. Replace safety boots at first sign of sole separation or toe cap exposure.
